2007 FREE STAGECRAFT MASTERCLASS
Stagecraft Masterclass: Presentation techniques for performers presented by Patrick Lim.
Venue : Golden Grove Arts Centre on Monday 13 August at 7.30pm
Our role as performers is to communicate with an audience. We are interpreting music and/or text and sharing this with an audience. This important point is often forgotten when as performers we need to concentrate on the technical demands of the music. However, to express the music effectively, we also need to communicate well with the audience as artists, not just through the music. This means our stage presence, our presentation and our relationship with the audience are paramount to the success of our musical performance. Negative aspects of our presentation will distract the audience from our music, whereas a confident, well-executed presentation will enhance our performance and create a clean and relaxed palette against which we can then perform our music.
Whilst we want to be natural on stage, this will not necessarily come naturally. We have to overcome nerves, practise our presentation skills and build up experience in developing a relationship with our audience.
Today’s masterclass will address these points in a practical way with student performances. • Making a Confident and Engaging Entrance • Posture and stance • Warming up (our bodies for presentation, not just our instrument/voice) • Physical energy and energised muscles • Arms and what to do with them • Body Language • Eye Contact • Acknowledging the adjudicator/audience • Gauging and responding to the reaction of the audience and developing a relationship with the audience • Adapting to the size and nature of the Venue • Working with your Accompanist or associate artists • Bowing and Exiting • Speaking in your presentation • maintaining your presentation during the music.
Extra points discussed during the masterclass : • Practise until you get it right • Be strategic, carefully select item/s that suit you and demonstate your ability • Adelaide often has short runs for shows • Eye contact, engage your audience from your entry, lift your chin, a small bow, don’t look at the floor • What happens next ? Tell or project a story to involve the audience • When introducing an item with an accompanist use a line such, “We will perform ………” • Your hands. Don’t conduct or use in other distracting ways such as touching your clothing • Breathing and projecting to involve the whole audience • Create a flow of energy from the floor and maintain a good posture • Shake out, loosen up, before walking on and decide where you will stop on the stage • If adjusting your position, etc. on stage do it as if you mean it and keep mistakes to yourself • Save highlights of an item for ‘peaks’ in the performance of it • Acknowledge your accompanist by a gesture and hold it sufficiently • Step back for others to be acknowledged • Use subtext or suitable description to set the mood and assist your item • Use individual audience focus or cumulative depending on circumstances • Use back acting to support a scene or other artist/s as necessary.
The free Masterclass duration was 75 minutes and any performer or person that appears in front of any audience was most welcome to attend. Presentation technique is often overlooked and seldom taught except in specialised enterprises. The components of body language, clarity of presentation, audience response, etc. were clearly demonstrated by Patrick Lim B.Mus.(Hons. Performance), LL.B(Hons), B.A., A.S.D.A.(Performer), Australian director and performer, one of Australia’s outstanding emerging artists with professional credits in opera, musical theatre and cabaret, the 2005 Young Achiever of the Year and 2005-2007 Artistic Director to the South Australian Primary Schools’ Festival of Music.
The STAGECRAFT MASTERCLASS in presentation technique for concert performers was initiated by Steve Garie and Adelaide Eisteddfod Society in co-operation with Out Of The Square “OOTS” and talented rising stars from the Adelaide Eisteddfod worked with Patrick in the session to hone their skills before the OOTS shows.
